Another reason not to take the bus

Poor Greyhound.

After a brutal murder aboard a Greyhound Canada bus in July and a number of stab wounds, the company has introduced new security measures in an attempt to protect passengers and drivers from random acts of violence.

The new measures, even stricter than those applied after September 11 attacks, include banning most hand baggage, looking for hand of any item on board and magnetic screening of all passengers in the terminals.

My God. Bus travel is now much worse.

I had the pleasure of a trip overnight Greyhound Montreal to Boston (as a backpacker who was the perfect skate-cheap option on a transport and accommodation). Now if you think the bus rides are unreliable - try a bus ride at night. Reduced rates are Greyhound transport mode choice for a lot of people probably would not choose to travel with in other circumstances.

It is good that Greyhound Canada is trying to improve safety, but imagine a bus ride with the luggage stowage underneath. "All but essential hand luggage" is prohibited - but what exactly does mean? Are books to keep boredom at bay essential? Or iPods? Or the water to stay hydrated?

And it means that all the additional security the process is slower. One more public transport (instead of flying, for example) is the fact that it is quite fast - you get your ticket, wait in line and your on your way. Now, with detection and recording, which will take longer.

If ever there was an incentive to drive, certainly this is?

Skip the bus, overnight accommodations offer security href = "http://www.driveaway.com.au/Car-Rental/Canada-Car-Hire.aspx?c=8356" rental Car> in Canada and throughout the U.S..
