Rocky Mountain Westy - Learn what to look for when buying a Vanagon or Westfalia Camper

Hello everyone and fans Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia. We here at Westy the Rockies have decided to start publishing articles that help answer the questions we receive from customers all the time. FAQs what to look for where the market to buy a Volkswagen Vanagon and Westfalia. Let's start there and we will write more articles for all of you as possible.

As most of you know Vanagons Volkswagen have manufacturered between 1980 and 1991. Different versions in the United States included the van-style passenger van Weekender, Westfalia caravan and Wolfsburg Editions carats. Let's break down these new models as we go.

Models from 1980 to mid-1983 were cooled to-air versions of the van T3. They lacked the lower grille that allows air from the cooler end of the years 1983 and 1991 U.S. models. This is an easy way Vanagon know if you're standing in front of an air-cooled model or not. The first models until 1985 also had round headlights. That's a dead give away if no one has changed. Many people buy a grill and headlamp system for a vehicle 1986 or later to give his older Vanagon the appearance of being much more recent. Lighthouse Square are brighter too.

Air-cooled Vanagon Westfalia models and do not produce very good warmth inside the truck because there is no system cooling to run coolant through a heater core, and new releases. If you like a hot water heater, you may not want to buy one is pre 1984.

Water-cooled models or "Wasserboxer" arrived in the U.S. market in late 1983 and sported a 1.9 liter engine capacity with a Digital Digijet or fuel system management Jet-Tronic. This model also includes options such as a nicer interior, tachometer, and a better transmission. Outside the lights were now rectangular, plastic bumpers and alloy wheels also options. The Vanagon 1986 also includes an improved system optional air conditioning had a style air duct system runs along the roof of the vehicle within the passenger models.

An automatic transmission Vanagon models available between 1980 and 1991. Some say that the automatic transmission was harder than the manual transmission, because until the 1990 model year, 3 / 4 slider center timing gear was faulty design. This sometimes causes the manual tranmissions to get stuck in 3rd or 4th gear. We believe that for sheer longevity, the manual transmission is still a better option.

The Syncro model four-wheel van was available from 1985 to 1992. These models sout are after and can be exremely expensive to buy now. Versions of the Syncro van in very good condition can bring over $ 100,000. Many people now Syncros passenger is buying style, and paying for the cut was not enough and switched to a high roof camper pop. This is a costly customization reaching some $ 7,000 by the time it's all done. Remember, this does not include and camping cabinets, beds, sink, stove or refrigerator. You have to find a donor Westy for that. However, some people must have a 4WD truck Vanagon for their outdoor adventures. Indeed we find that a little two-wheel drive camper raised will go about 90% of the places you would never leave. It also saves tens of thousands of dollars for food and fuel in their camping trips. Do not get me wrong, a Syncro camper is a very good and valuable vehicle. It is just outside the price range most of the people by a van 20 years.

Syncros must be supplied with front and locks the rear differential as the box is not as strong, and are subject to failure if the loads are carried. Locks help prevent this slippage wheel off-road conditions and can help overcome limited axle articulation. Ensure that any purchase has syncro skid plate protection for the line conduction and transmission. If not, install it as soon as possible before serious offenses off-road adventure.

In the grand scheme of things, Vanagons remain a good value if you find a nice and keep maintained. They have their problems and design flaws that are constantly being observed and treated by the Mountains Rocky Westy. We want to keep these vehicles on the road for a long time. Let's look at some of the common things that need to me is inspected when to buy a Vanagon or Westfalia.

  • Want a model air-cooled or water cooled model? (As the heat in the water-cooled model in a pile other improvements)
  • Head gaskets leaking at 1.9 and 2.1 liters Wasserboxers. (Have a family member with the Vanagon technicain check the gaskets and leaks. This can easily be a $ 1200 repair after purchasing the truck. Everyone does it.)
  • Cooling system leaks and cracks in the towers cooling or water distribution flanges. (The factory cooling tower distributing many coolant hoses get brittle and break. This will cause an overheating engine damage. We make stainless steel replacements that never fails.)
  • Coolant leaking pipes or cracked? (There is a set of cooling pipes ranging from the engine to the front of the vehicle to carry coolant to and from the radiator. They will crack and leak too. Replace with stainless life all of us.)
  • Check for leaks in the engine oil (vanagons flight, but make sure it is not dumping pools of oil in the ground in a short period of time. Valve cover gaskets are easy to replace. Crankshaft seals, rear main seals and pumps commonly leak oil)
  • Check axle boots for cuts or tears. (Dirt on the CV joints in the axles will spoil and they need to be replaced)
  • Camper check buyers of equipment. (Make sure the stove, sink and refrigerator are all in good condition.)
  • Check the canvas upper and a berth in the campers. (Open the top, it only takes a few seconds and you can check the status of the upper berth and the canvas tent. The fabric is not very expensive to replace, but is time consuming to replace exremely correctly.)
  • Brake master cylinder leaks. (The master cylinder is in the rear of the instrument panel. A lot of people who have a T3 or even know it. They tend to leak from the master cylinder or reservoir. Check both areas.)
  • If you find a Vanagon or a tent, with factory A / C, make sure it works properly. If you really need to work on this vehicle which can be very expensive to repair, especially in a van as some of the lines run through the cabinets, etc.)
  • upper ball joints (most of T3S upper ball joints need replaced after 150K miles. No big deal, but added to his list of expenses to negotiate a price for the vehicle.
  • Camper interiors. (Check to make sure that all the curtains and tie backs are in place. All the cushions are there. The folding rear seat upper berth properly. Also check out the swivel seats for the operation. Most campers have them)

We believe this will give you a good idea clear what to look for when buying a T3 or camper van. Remember, it is very important to very detailed inspection and test drive the vehicle before you commit Shopping. If you are not familier with Vanagons, take it to a shop that works on them all the time for an inspection. Bring this list if you wish. We hope this will help in your search for the perfect T3. Be sure to come see RockyMountainWesty online. We will help you keep that Vanagon in the best shape.
