Move through the U.S. with parrots ...?
I may be moving across the U.S. (From Seattle, WA To Wash, DC), and will be my 5 parrots with me (3 parakeets and 2 macaws). I am looking for a way to safely move them without trauma. We will not consider sending them or control them. Is there someone who has achieved such a feat has learned lessons that would like to share? Does anyone else have any ideas? We talked about renting / buying a house stock ... Has anyone tried this and care to comment on how well it worked out? (Are KOA sites tolerant of noisy pets?) PS We are aware of the issues the legal status of birds in several states (for example, some believe that some of them agricultural pests), CITES issues, and quarantine areas END, health certificates, etc, and all are in bands and / o chipping. The issue is not only the logistics of moving safely and with minimal stress.
A friend of mine travels frequently with sulfur-crested cockatoo, McCloud. He has a travel cage that fits in the back seat of his car and may be subjected in his chair, and has established branches of trees that allow you to look out the windows or not as he pleases. She has used her travel cage to put it in the newspaper at home, so I recognize as normal. You can test this for all load and go for walks around the city to see how they react. On long trips will also implement their large cage in the trailer (a home built trailer designed to serve double duty as as a way to haul things and as a trailer to sleep with air conditioning) you can get some relief in the afternoon of the small size of the travel cage. When she was two birds, who devised a barrier between the cages they could not see us because McCloud gets jealous and starts screaming. Always carry plenty of water bottles to refill her plate, where the water is not good for him and a good supply of food and medicine normal (he has a liver disorder that requires daily medication). She has also come to your veterinarian to recommend other veterans of birds along your route if you get sick McCloud. Her husband has developed a carrier for McCloud to ride bikes along with them, but she prefers to take in car. While it's where you can see his always travels well. As far as I know, no problems with KOA campgrounds. She prefers when she travels as a way to keep low cost. You might consider calling prospective campsites for reservations and discuss this with them in advance in case they need some more remote campsites. Be La Quinta accepts dogs - wonder if they would allow the parrots in cages? Especially once the birds have settled for the night should not have a lot of noise too. Also might think of their birds in particular and if they can cause damage to a recreational vehicle rental and then take steps to prevent making any. McCloud loves biting windows and corners of the wall and so you have to make sure your cage is secured well away from either. The main things to worry about will be temperature, since the vehicles can be heated quickly in the summer sun, the movement of the cages in any vehicle you use, and possibly exhaust gases. However, generally if the interior of the vehicle is comfortable for humans is likely to be comfortable for the birds. They certainly prefer to travel with you than with strangers.
