7 family, a family vacation to New Zealand.Where go, what to do.?

We are a family of 7, (2 adults 5 children) thinking about going to New Zealand next April for a holiday. We're still deceiding whether to do a self drive package holiday, car or just a big motorhome hire a People Mover and stay in accommodation such as hotels, lodges, etc. What are the places not to be missed, what things we do, we must plan for it or just see where the wind takes us. We are waiting to go for 10 days. No need to pay for airfare (frequent flyer points) as it is still ideal for booking tours. love the scenic aspects of the holiday, not so much the bungee jumping or extreme sports and events. Wow - they'll have their hands full with 5 children, I find it quite difficult with two! 10 days is not much time - enough to both islands. big motorhome anyway, or anywhere people mover. Depends, are you doing the two islands? Why not hire a people mover in the North Island and a motorhome in the South Island - the best of both worlds.
