A lock is a mechanism that secures buildings, rooms, furniture, food, or other storage facilities. A key is often used to open a lock. Means of opening a lock often include what you know (a combination), which has (a key or keycard) or what you are.
Locksmithing is one of the earliest forms of security engineering lock picking was one of the first methods of cracking security systems.
Terminology
A blacksmith "of any type is one who shapes metal pieces, often using a forge or mold useful objects or to be part of a structure more complex. Locksmithing, as its name implies, is the assembly and designing of locks and their keys.
Work
Although installation of keys to replace lost keys for cars and homes and the change of keys for homes and businesses to maintain security are still an important part of locksmithing, locksmiths Today the main players in the installation of high quality locks and the design, implementation and management of keys and key control systems. Most locksmiths also do electronic lock services, such as making keys for transponder-equipped vehicles and the implementation and enforcement of access control systems to protect people and assets for many large institutions. In terms of physical security, a locksmith's work frequently is to make a determination of the level of risk to an individual or an institution and then recommending and implementing the right mix of equipment and policies to create "security layers" which exceed the reasonable gain to an intruder or attacker. The more different security levels are applied, plus the skills requirement and knowledge and tools to defeat them all. But because each layer comes at a cost to the client, the application of appropriate levels without exceeding reasonable costs customer is often very important and requires a highly skilled and knowledgeable locksmith to determine.
Employment
Locksmiths may be commercial (working out shop), mobile (working out of a vehicle), institutional locksmiths (employed by an institution) or investigational (forensic) or may specialize on one aspect of the ability, as an automotive lock specialist, a specialist system master key or a safety engineer. Many (not all) are also security consultants, but not every security consultant has the skills and knowledge of a locksmith. Locksmiths are frequently certified in the skill areas or for a specific level of skill in the trade. This is independent of the certificates of completion of training. In determining levels qualifications, certifications from manufacturers or locksmith associations are usually more valid criteria for certificates of completion. Some locksmiths decide call themselves "Master Locksmiths" whether they are fully trained or not, and some training certificates appear quite authoritative. It should be noted, however, In some countries a particular level of qualification or membership of an organization is necessary before we can adopt the term Master Locksmith.
Locks
In the general case, a lock will not keep out an absolutely determined intruder with unlimited resources, skills, knowledge and time. However, even a minimal lock can delay a typical intruder for a time, and the disturbance generated in circumventing a high quality lock, for example, breaking windows or doors may deter many attackers, causing them to direct their attacks against softer targets.
When combined with secure containers, or document destruction systems, or electronic access or alarm systems, locks can provide much higher level of security. Some locksmiths possess these skills, and form relationships business with companies or individuals with these specialties.
Full disclosure "
The issue of full disclosure was made by first time in the context of locksmithing, in a dispute over whether the 19th century deficiencies locking systems should be kept secret in the locksmithing community, or disclosed the public.
According to AC Hobbs:
A commercial, and in some respects social doubt has been started in the last year or two, whether or not it is appropriate for discuss so openly the security or insecurity of locks. Many well-meaning people believe that the discussion respecting the means for baffling the supposed safety of locks offers a premium for dishonesty, by showing others how to be dishonest. This is a fallacy. Rogues are very interested in his profession, and we know much more than we can teach them respecting their several kinds of mischief. Rogues knew a lot about lockpicking long before locksmiths discussed among themselves, as they have done lately. If a crash leaves that have been made in any country, or by the manufacturer, is not so inviolable as it has done so far has considered which undoubtedly is in the interest of the honest people know this, because the dishonest are fairly certain to apply the knowledge practically and dissemination of knowledge is necessary to give fair play to those who might suffer by ignorance. It can not be too serious urged that knowledge of facts, in the end, be better for all the parties. Some time ago, when the reading public was alarmed for saying how London milk is adulterated, timid persons deprecated the exposure, with the pretext that it would give instructions in the art of adulterating the milk, a vain fear, milkmen knew all about him before, either practicing or not, and exposure of the buyers only teaches the need for a little scrutiny and caution, leaving them to obey this necessity or not, at will.
Locksmithing is a trade traditional, and in most countries requires completion of an apprenticeship. The level of formal education required varies from country to country, a certificate given simple training by an employer, to a total of a High School Diploma Engineers (as in Australia), including the time spent working as an apprentice.

GPS systems?
GPS units are all the rage, and though many of them are excellent, they have, for my application, a serious shortcoming: They do not offer a wireless remote antenna. In my case, our Class C motorhome with outgoing cabinet opposes the mounting board, unless a cable 16 'is spread across the board, through the bed and then hung from the skylight to ensure a signal. Poor quality. Besides a clean install w / whole less until many advantages, including a simple change in your car or with the monitor in another part of the coach. I think the mfgrs. know, and would prefer that you buy several units in place to go through hassle.Let s face that distance wireless technology has existed for many years. I'll wait.
I think RobertJ is offline way, you can probably get something like a mouse or similar GPS if you have enough signal strength on the cable (or wireless transmission) for the signal over 20 feet long or whatever necessary for a PDA. I suspect that a Bluetooth GPS that fit the bill perfectly, I would like to find a retailer local and see if I can be tested on your computer make sure the signal would make the PDA. You can get a pretty good price PDA, if you want to buy one first, make sure that has Bluetooth capability.
