Hitch your trailer: How does the length of trailer Trailer Stability

Imagine this scene: you and your family are enjoying their brand travel trailer. Not only is your new trailer, but so is his new trailer and bright. Call it a heavy-duty diesel truck and a car extended four-door has plenty of room for his wife and children.

This really a great part of the non-traditional "American Dream" what? family time with a recreational vehicle, away from civilization, but do so in the comfort of a brand new travel trailer. I do not think could be improved lot.

Only one problem. It is a windy day. When you pick up your new mobile home at the dealership the other day never occurred to him how he could be frightening to tow the trailer some time down the highway in a severe crosswind.

Dealing with wind is a fact of life if you go to any kind of amateur RV, so make sure you know how to safely tow it.

In reality it all comes down to the length of your trailer in relation to the length of vehicle used to tow with it. Think of it this way - is the whole influence. If your trailer is long relative to the wheelbase of the vehicle being used to tow the trailer, you could be in the holiday interesting.

A motor home has a huge profile in the wind, so if the Mother Nature is blowing hard, or if you're getting passed by tractor trailers at high speed, the trailer basically acts like a sail. Not very different wear a piece of four foot by eight foot plywood.

If you've ever had that experience you know what I mean. The wood acts as a sailing and can be dragged all over the place, if you do not know how to handle it.

In the same way you need strength to handle the wood in the wind, it takes a long wheelbase tow your vehicle to handle the flip of a relatively long travel trailer. If you have a trailer twenty-three square foot and you're pulling a small SUV, chances are you're going to get turned around a bit.

But, that same small SUV would have no problem at all with a small folding tent trailer. Everything is relative.

As a general guideline I'd suggest they could pull a trailer with about twenty feet long time your vehicle has a wheelbase of 110 inches minimum. So that's about nine feet of wheelbase to handle twenty feet of trailer.

If you want to get a longer trailer, I recommend that you have at least four inches of wheelbase for each additional meter of length of the trailer. So you are always sure to keep the relationship between the length of the trailer wheelbase high enough.

One final thought is that not only must consider the entire length of the trailer, but also the distance from the coupler (or tongue) on the axis of the trailer. There will be a big difference in stability a trailer in which the links on the tongue is really short distance, compared to one where very long.

Buying a used tent trailer - what features to look for?

We are thinking about buying a tent trailer hand session, but we are not sure what features people would recommend and what to avoid. Any advice? We have no make and model in mind we are still doing research on pricing and options. We are in Canada, so that an A / C would be wonderful summer, but I would also like an oven to extend the season of camping in the spring and fall. We only have a mini-van, so I will not be able to drag (Or allow) any larger units - probably 10 feet box with no exit slides.

Excellent advice above about making sure you have enough tow vehicle! What are you going to tow the trailer and what is classified? We bought a fairly large local and towed with a minivan (Without a brake controller), and that was a stressball the trailer all the time ... in fact, I got in a few hairy situations (ie, trying to stop at a red light at the bottom of a hill after cresting at the top ... I do not think he would (but ))... so I bought a F-150 with a trailer brake controller actulally is a joy now ... using the trailer brakes makes a world of difference ... Do not tell me what to do pop-up that is ... that's important because then we can give tips on how to check the lift system to make sure it is working well ... add that the above advice on how to check the status of material canvas (making sure it is not too stale ... like canvas that are allowed to stay wet can rot the threads that hold it together) ... Nice features that ... A / C (especially in the south) ... an oven, some people want to have a propane / AC refrigerator (some do not), a cassette toilet is good (but not essential ... also a portal Potti work), slide exits, etc, etc. .. everything is based on your preferences and how much to spend ...
